The map was devised by Arthur H. Robinson, an American geography professor, in the s because modern mapmakers had become dissatisfied with the distortions inherent to the Mercator projection and wanted a world projection that felt more realistic. As such, the Robinson projection has become more popular than the Mercator. Most popular world maps employ a projection that compromises among these conflicting goals. There are dozens of different world map projections. Most sold by the Map Center use one of the following five: Mercator: Until a generation ago this was the ubiquitous general purpose world map. Now it is out of favor because it greatly exaggerates.

In cartography, a map projection is a way to flatten a globe's surface into a plane in order to make a map. This requires a systematic transformation of the latitudes and longitudes of locations from the surface of the globe into locations on a plane. All projections of a sphere on a plane necessarily distort the surface in some way and to some extent.   But if you want a better idea of the relative size of the world’s landmasses, you need a map that distorts shape but preserves area, like the Peters projection Author: Donald Houston.

The Peters World Map is an Equal Area cylindrical projection with standard parallels at 45 degrees thus resulting in a distortion of shape which is stretched about the equator and squashed towards the poles, but having the great advantage that all countries are correct in size in relation to each other. Widely used in educational and business. Robinson projection, which was developed in and is seen in books, is considered to be aesthetically pleasing, but it distorts the size and shape of the : Anonna Dutt.

The most popular map projection in the world has been around for years now. It was created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in – a time when Antarctica hadn’t even been discovered. Mercator was designed as a navigational tool for sailors as it was most convenient to hand-plot courses with parallel rules and triangles on this map.

The poles cannot be represented on the Mercator projection. All meridians can be projected, but the upper and lower limits of latitude are approximately 80° N and S.

Large area distortion makes the Mercator projection unsuitable for general geographic world maps. Uses and applications. Standard sea navigation charts (direction). The original equal-area version of the adaptive composite map projections schema uses the Lambert azimuthal projection for regional maps, and three alternative projections for world maps.
