The Big Sleep General Sternwood's daughters came in both the colours of trouble - blonde and brunette - and they had all the usual vices. My friend had given a book called the Raymond Chandler omnibus. It has 4 of Phillip Marlow stories or novels by Raymond chandler: the big sleep, Farewell my lovely (movie Murder my sweet), the high window, and lady in the lake. I had seen the big sleep, and it was a confusing if ever of a movie. I read the book, and it was even more confusing.

Movie Marlowe truly begins with Murder, My Sweet () starring Dick Powell. (Earlier, unheralded Chandler adaptations Time to Kill and The Falcon Takes Over had detectives that weren’t even called Marlowe.) Based on the novel Farewell, My Lovely, Murder, My Sweet was a hit at the time and still has a good reputation today. Each film frame is perfectly composed and just gorgeous to look at. Marlowe translated the three books of Amores (which were originally five, as referred to in the first line of Elegia I "We which were Ovid's five books now are three." The original edition of Ovid's work of five books has been lost to history [Howatson 32] – the only version available during Marlowe's time, and now, is the second and reduced.

That's because this is Marlowe past his prime, and Mitchum imbues Raymond Chandler's legendary private detective with a sense of maturity as well as a melancholy spirit.

And yet there's plenty of Mitchum's renowned self-deprecating humor and charismatic. I nearly stopped reading the books after the sickening opening scenes of Farewell, My Lovely, which features the murder of a black man that no one, not moral Philip Marlowe and certainly not the deeply corrupt police, cares is e even describes a black man being thrown out on the street in tones of such dehumanization that the man is not ‘he’, but ‘it’.

Overview. Raymond Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely, first published inis a crime drama best described as a noir ed for adult audiences, the novel follows many noir conventions, such as the plot centering around a murder investigation; the protagonist, Philip Marlowe, being both a private investigator and an anti-hero; and the setting consisting of a dark city run by criminals. The other major female character in Farewell, My Lovely is Anne Riordan, an inquisitive, tough, sharp-witted writer who helps Marlowe during his investigation and later acts as Marlowe’s.But this book had a personally touch to it.

I felt intrigued, captivated and amused by this unconventional character that by the time I finished Farewell My Lovely, I could only see Marlowe as a real person come to life, rather than a fictional character.

This case was a serious and dangerous one for Marlowe, HE was the one being targeted.
